Keep coffee grounds in the filter, not in the pot

If your morning coffee has grounds at the bottom of the pot, your coffee filter is probably collapsing when you start brewing, says Laura Medley of Owensboro, Ky. Whether you get your coffeemaker ready the night before or the morning of, try this the next time:

After you put the new filter in the basket, fill it with water to saturate it. Then remove the water and add the desired amount of coffee grounds. The wet filter will “stick” to the sides of the catch basket.

Conservation tip: Instead of dumping the water down the drain, you can use the same water when measuring to make your coffee.
